Late Night Surprise

teeny tinies

Friends of ours heard some LOUD mewing starting Monday night and found a 5-gallon bucket with 4 very young kittens.  They brought them to me because I have experience and supplies. They will look for a fostering agency, but I kept them for last night because they’re not great at the bottle yet.

The kittens were very cold when they arrived so we had to warm them between 2 heating pads before they had any interest in eating.  Their poop so far is meconium and one still has a bit of umbilical cord on, so I think they’re at most a few days old.  They all ate this morning and then weighed between 3.5 and 4.5 ounces.

I’m glad your friends heard them before it was too late! Several years ago Paula and I discovered a box with several kittens on our early morning walk, but the long cold night had been too much for them and they were dead. I buried them, but was very angry and wrote a letter to our local paper exposing the cruelty and suggesting alternatives.
So, I am glad they ended up getting some good TLC!
Fuzz is too, he is licking the computer as I type this.

Wow! our story is already on the web – and with a bonus video to boot! Thanks thanks thanks Barbara for helping us with the wee ones last night. You were so generous and didn’t even complain one bit about us barging in in the middle of the night. The kittens look so strong and healthy today – good job! I’ve been working down the list of shelters on and off today – not easy finding bottle baby foster moms, as I am sure you know well. Pamela (and Stuart)

I’m thinking that I could foster them for a couple weeks, until they’re pretty competent (but not yet weaned) and then we find another foster–perhaps Pamela?

And BEBHS will check on the tinies next week sometime. We just need to cover foster care for a while. They are eating well now.

I’m certainly open to taking care of them inna bit, but got some logistics hurdles to get over.

But very glad you are able to care for them at this perilous time in their life…
