Turtling

straws! They play pretty wildly now–the girl even jumped straight up and hit the underside of the table.  I want to let them out in the room where there’s more room to run about, but they have to be more trusting first, or at least well in the habit of hiding in the carrier.

The boy often will play just a little out of the carrier, so he can pull back quickly (turtling).  They’re just learning that my hands and feet are not like other toys–I try to not startle them with my reactions, and it’s working pretty well.

Names under consideration are Fyodor and Avdotya.  Suggestions are welcome.

While I was downstairs posting this, they made a jail break–they’re more competent and heavier that the little kittens I’m more used to and, probably the girl, pushed the gate open enough to escape. After a little searching, I found them under the desk, but did have to chase and corner each. I caught the boy first and I think he was very relieved to be able to hide in the carrier, so I was able to leave the cage open and herd his sister in. I’m weighting the gate with the old “portable” singer sewing machine now.

I held them again, and now I’m in the same room, but not in the cage with them. This is the first they’ve stayed out of the carrier with me in the room.

Misha (male) and Masha (female) as suggested by Betsy. Easy to say and remember.
