Acting Normal

IMG_9004The kittens continue to do well.  Occasionally, one or two refuses a meal.  Mostly, they are eager.  They can find their way back to the warm places in bed.  Their ears are opening up more.  They can negotiate a path along a bunched up towel.  They are getting a bit bunged, but not dangerously so.  Mostly, they complain if poop is immanent.

Getting Around

IMG_9001Now when they notice I’ve entered the room, they work on getting out of bed.  They’re still pretty unsure of those big steps down from the bedding on the heating pad, so they are very careful and slow.  Then they are a little uncertain if they can cross the towel, and they really don’t want to walk on the floor.  If I’m close enough to the towel they do try, and even try to climb the cliff that is my knee, up to the land of milk, though not honey.  They pretty much know their way back to bed, although they appreciate the hat being open a bit so it’s easier to crawl inside it.  While perched on their warm bed though, they are looking curiously at the world beyond it.

Moving Day

hard to tell the towel from the boys

I moved them to half the space under the table in the loft room so they’d have room to play and a potty place that isn’t their bed (even if it isn’t the litter box yet).  Plus, they’ve been getting more aware of people coming into the room, and I wanted a warm spot not covered with a towel so they could get a little more light.  I have this lid on its side to provide a roof to trap the heat from the heating pad.

They’re doing well, all at least 50% heavier than they were 4 days ago.  They went with me to work yesterday and perhaps knew the difference between Concord and Berkeley water, used to mix their formula.  They ate eventually, and made the switch back.  They were a little frustrated on the BART ride home: I had their bottle upright in their carrier and they found it but couldn’t drink from it.  In another week or so, taking them would be harder to do because I’m not carrying a litter box with me.

Our Gang

a conspiracy of catsYes, I already posted today, but I like this picture.  A rare shot of them in a hat not all trying to climb to my mouth.

Small But Healthy

Melvin is a white cloud

Melvin is a white cloud

We all slept well last night.  Even Memphis, who apparently is much happier now that he can consistently drink from the bottle.  There’s even been pooping, although Memphis only wears the evidence on his side so I think he has yet to produce his own.

When clean, Memphis has lovely fur.  I think it will be long and it’s got a dark undercoat and light surface.  He’s headed for elegance.  Malibu has stippled hairs and white paws, making her very striking.  And Melvin has a moon face, all round with a little crease on his nose that may fade with growth.  His paws are a very pale pink.

As for size, they are growing.  I checked back on previous litters, and Malibu’s 109 grams was more like the weight of a kitten a few days old, not a 2-week-old youngster with open eyes.  Two days later and she’s up to 133 grams.  I don’t know their back story, but I have the feeling their mother was having trouble feeding them.

Hatful of kittens

Even after eating, they’re pretty loud.  I ended up just taking Memphis out and holding him around 4 a.m. so everyone else could sleep.  After being held a while, he took the bottle better than he had so far and ended up more content.  Later in the morning, we all slept.  Memphis still sings the blues a lot.

The hat is a recent gift from a friend: it fits my head but fits kittens well too.

And 2013 Kitten Season Has Started

The Ms of 2013

The Ms of 2013

Malibu is the tabby girl, Memphis the smokey siamesey one, and Melvin is the cream siamesey one.  They’re about 2 weeks old, and it looks like Malibu’s eyes aren’t quite all the way open.  They’re very light but I’ve not weighed them yet.  They all ate, Memphis less well than the other two, and he’s complaining more.  I think they need to get warmer and settled in.
