Not The Post I Wanted To Make

13 May

IMG_20150513_153056Don Carlos is gone.  He was fine in the morning, but this afternoon, he barfed several times.  I tucked him in my shirt where he was quiet.  Next time I checked, he was starting to poop so I set him in the litter and he just lay there, splay legged.  He had a little umph left, but not much.  I had Bob take him to the humane society vet and they diagnosed him with panleukopenia–the same as what the Z’s were diagnosed with but maybe did not have.  The vet uses a better (and pricier) test now, so they’re more sure of the diagnosis.  While there, Don Carlos developed bloody poop and looked miserable, so they put him down.  (it is a nearly always fatal disease for which they get the first of 3 vaccines starting at 4 weeks I think).

No one else is gaining as well as Don Carlos was, but they’re all still acting healthy.  The shelter will try giving them an immunity booster tomorrow morning.

How contagious is this — is the immunity booster standard but earlier than normal, or is it a last chance?

Don’t know. It’s maybe a “hail mary” for some of them. They go in tomorrow afternoon, because morning is lots of little kittens coming in.

They’re all alive and fairly chipper this morning (at earlier at 2 a.m.). Last night they were all playing like kittens, but some are symptomatic. My vote is to not give up unless they’re hurting.

I am so sorry! I had a kitten that was suspected of having panleuk, fortunately none of the other kittens got it.
